Heriot-Watt University is a public university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the world's first mechanics institute Royal Charter granted in 1966, and has campuses in the Scottish Borders, Orkney, United Arab Emirates and Putrajaya in Malaysia. It takes the name Heriot-Watt from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.
Heriot-Watt has been named International University of the Year by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018. The university is ranked among the World's Top 500 by all three major rankings 302 in QS World University Rankings, 351 to 400 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 401 to 500 in Academic Ranking of World Universities. In the latest Research Excellence Framework, it was ranked overall in the Top 25% of UK universities and 1st in Scotland for research impact. It has been rated 'silver' in the latest UK Teaching Excellence Framework.

Admission to our programmes is by individual assessment - experience and skills are valued alongside formal qualifications. We look for evidence of motivation, understanding of the aims of a proposed programme of study, referees' reports.

For most subjects we require 75% overall in year 12 state board high school examinations and at least 75% in the relevant subjects. For example if you want to study chemical engineering, you would need to have 75% in both maths and chemistry.

Accommodation at Edinburgh Campus
Living on our beautiful Edinburgh Campus is a great way to meet others from all over the world and make lifelong friends. Our student accommodation is conveniently located within easy reach of the teaching buildings, sports facilities, catering venues and the Student Union.
We have 2000 residential places available at our Edinburgh Campus with a range of types and prices, from self-catered rooms to studio flats.
You will have your own study bedroom, the majority of which have en-suite bathrooms, and access to home comforts – broadband and laundry facilities. Each hall has a warden who is there to help you settle in and sort out any problems you might encounter. There is also 24 hour security on the campus.
A recent multi-million-pound investment programme has seen brand new and improved student accommodation on our Edinburgh Campus. We involved our students in the process of design, gathering their views and opinions to ensure the residences would be tailored to students needs and priorities. Three hundred rooms were opened in 2012 and a further 450 in September 2016.
Undergraduate accommodation
Studying as an undergraduate student at our Edinburgh campus you will be placed in accommodation with other new 1st years or direct entrants into 2nd, 3rd or 4th year. All our undergraduate halls are conveniently located near to the Student Union, sports facilities and academic buildings allowing you to make the most of living on campus.
We have a range of different types of accommodation to suit your requirements. You will be asked to select your first and second preference of accommodation type when making your application.
